Foster Wheeler, USA

Jan 2007 – Jan 2008 · Contract

Senior Civil-Structural Engineer

  • Re-evaluated the existing coke structure to support a larger coke drum — a structure 170 ft long by 65 ft wide with a total height of 325 ft to the top elevation of the derrick.
  • Calculated empty, operating, wind, seismic and lift loads to ASCE 7, and built a STAAD Pro model from as-built drawings with updated loads from vendor data.
  • Evaluated existing derrick structural sufficiency to AISC 9th edition requirements and existing tabletop capacity to ACI 318-05 requirements.
  • Proposed modifications to reinforce the existing structure for construction, lift and updated loads, and resolved the resulting construction issues with the lead engineer.
  • Investigated and proposed modifications to the existing tabletop concrete structure supporting the T-1200N fractionator tower (20 ft diameter by 110 ft high) at the Valero refinery in Port Arthur, Texas: calculated and applied empty, operating, hydro test, wind and seismic loads transferred by the tower under IBC 2006 and ASCE 7, and evaluated tabletop capacity to ACI 318-05.
